The History of the Hurley Coffee Company Building
The building that houses the Hurley Coffee Company is actually
much older than it looks. Built in 1888, or slightly before, it was veneered
with brick by 1905. Occupants over time included Guterkunst & Hein,
Undertakers and Furniture Dealers ( a common combination in the era, since
both jobs required skilled woodworkers), and Trolla's Market, which was in
business here as early as 1928. The storefront facing 2nd Avenue, housed a
women's hat maker in 1891, and a shoe repair shop in 1922.
In 1997, the building was purchased and renovations completed to create
the Hurley Coffee Company, bringing back the turn of the century
treasures that are part of the buildings decor. Offering richly,
flavorful gourmet coffee with the Hurley Coffee Company label, in
addition to fine food and specialty gifts, the atmosphere is warm and
friendly.
